Graeme Souness has criticised Manchester United's performance in their loss at Newcastle on Sunday and claimed Liverpool will now fancy pipping their rivals to second place in thePremier Leaguetable.

The Red Devils fell to a 1-0 defeat at St James' Park before Liverpool moved to within two points of their rivals by brushing aside Southampton 2-0 at St Mary's just hours later.

Working as a pundit for Sky Sports, Souness insistedJose Mourinhohas got players of exceptional individual ability but must get them to function as a unit after a lacklustre display.

When asked if Liverpool will think second place is up for grabs, Souness replied: 'Definitely. Most definitely. If you look at their games, the away games they have then they'll be thinking they can finish second.

'I think United today huffed and puffed. Jose was talking all about Newcastle after the gameand not about his own team because I think heknew they weren't very good today.

'He's got a good collection of players that, on paper, there are some big names but that doesn't mean you're a good team. I think he'll be worried about their performance today.'
