Breaking: MMM founder Sergey Mavrodi dies of heart attack in Moscow hospital

According to a report by Moskovsky Komsomolets, the founder of the MMM series of financial pyramid schemes, Mavrodi, died in Moscow at the age of 62.

Mavrodi was taken to a city hospital from a bus stop overnightMonday, March 26, after he felt weakness and pain in the chest area."The emergency team has failed to save his life.

He died this morning,"the report said. The preliminary cause of death is a heart attack.

Sergei Mavrodi created the company"MMM" in 1992. It quickly gained popularity and became the largest financial pyramid inthe history of Russia. The income of the members who joined it was paid out of the contributions of new arrivals, and when theflow of customers ceased to grow, non-payments began.

According to various estimates, the number of victims of the MMM has reached10-15 million people. In 1994, Mavrodi became a member of the Russian parliament. Then he announced that he was giving up his privileges: salaries and cars. Mavrodi stressed that he became a deputy only for the sake of immunity.

Two years later, before the presidential elections in 1996, he was stripped of his mandate. In 2007, Mavrodi was sentenced to 4.5 yearsin prison for defrauding 10,000 investors out of 110 million rubles ($4.3 million). All this time he left during the preliminary detention while the investigation was conducted.

Mavrodi claimed he is not the beneficiary of the donations and he is not used to flamboyant lifestyle. His true charges of which he was later convicted of is tax fraud though he claimed that MMM scheme is not a business, but a mutual donation program of which there is no law against such.In 2016, he announced the creation of his own crypto currency - Mavro.

In the first month, 33,000 people took part in the project.MMM stands for the first letters of the founders’ surnames - Sergei Mavrodi, Olga Melnikova and Vyacheslav Mavrodi. However, some people believe that it stands for Mavrodi Mondial Moneybox. The company got a lot of money from people - it was making about 50 million USD each day.

MMM started as a company that imported office equipment. However, there were some problems. In January 1992 the company was accused of tax evasion. This led to problems with the financial support of company's operation.

It struggled. But how did MMM achieve that? The company promised annual returns for up to 1000% to private investors. It sounded quite attractive, and a lot of people were eager to invest. With strong advertising andnaive people (no one heard about scams during that time), MMM became one of the most successful companies in Russia.

However, the success didn’t last for long. Eventually, the company was shut down in 1994 and it declared bankruptcy in 1997. Unfortunately, everything didn't end there. After 14 years, the company reopened as “MMM Global.”

MMM in Nigeria

MMM started in Nigeria in November 2015, when it launched a new website for Nigerian audience. In Nigeria, the company decided to lower the standards and promised profit was 30%per month. The primary target of MMM was unemployed people.
The number of people that signed up by the late 2016 was shocking - 2.4 million! They hoped that MMM would give them easy money and they had no doubts.
Unfortunately, after a year of work in Nigeria, MMM announced the freezing of all members accounts.According to the company, the reason was “systems overload and the negative attention brought on by the Government and mass media.
”After the freeze of members’ accounts, people started to panic. Sadly, the worst thing that happened was that the panic led them to even attempt to end their lives.
Things got so serious that even the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency asked the citizens to look out for each other and call the emergency number if someone was trying to kill himself.

Surprisingly, on January 2017 MMM Nigeriareopened. Also, on February 11th the company announced the lifting of the withdrawal limits on 2017 mavro.Investors were angry because of the delayed, and unfulfilled payments and some people left the scheme.

The investors who stayed loyal to the company were given assurance of getting back their money. But the company stated that in order to get the pre-2017 money, investors should add new money. And the more they add, the higher their chances to get the previous money back.

Though MMM came back, it could not regain the trust of the bulk of the investors failed to make huge impact it had when it was first introduced.About 110 countries suffered from MMM, including various African countries like Kenya, Ghana, Zimbabwe. People believed inthe company and wanted to get a lot of money almost out of nowhere.

And by doing so with Vladimir Putin, President Trump insulted every Russian citizen who was denied the right to vote in a free and fair election to determine their country's future, including the countless Russian patriots who have risked so much to protest and resist Putin's regime."

Nigeria is sick and empty- Prof. Wole Soyinka

NEXT

Nobel Laureate,Professor Wole Soyinka has described Nigeria as a sick and empty country, deserving of the term “shithole” as described by United States President,Donald Trump.

Soyinka said this while speaking at the Ripples Nigerian Dialogue titled “Rebuilding trust in a Divided Nigeria,”held at The Wheatbaker Hotel in Ikoyi, Lagos.

“We have become laughing stocksin the eyes of the public. We have earned the term of shithole. Nigeria is sick and empty. Some retrogressive forces won’t just stop. Everything Nigeria touches rusts”he said.

He condemned the humiliation of Nigerians by  military personnel, stating that the humiliation of Nigerians led him to relocating abroad.“The treatment of Nigerians by the military led me to relocating to a saner clime. I remember invading Obasanjo’s residence in Lagos and challenging him concerning the way Nigerians were being treated. It is a disgrace to us, as a nation. We have been left behind in nearly every field. There are lessons to be learnt from the diaspora. We need to peep acrossthe Atlantic to see how other countries have been faring,” Soyinka said.  Drawing illustrations from his lecture titled “From Miyetti to Haiti: Notes from a Solidarity Visit,”Soyinka emphasized the need to end slavery in our  society.

Soyinka emphasized the need of looking in the mirror to solve Nigerian problems and encouraged  youths to resist the passage of the Hate Speech bill.

''Stop contesting the title of incompetence with GoodluckJonathan, leave him alone'' Aisha Yesufu tells President Buhari

The co-convener of the Bring Back Our Girls group tweeted this while reacting to President Buhari's comment in Dapchi, Yobe state yesterday March 14th. President Buhari during his meeting with parents of the 110 abducted Dapchi school girls, saidhis administration acted faster after the abduction of the girls unlike the Goodluck Jonathan's administration that were insensitive when the Chibok schoolgirls were abducted in April 2014.

''Fake marriages are now taking place in Nigeria'' Immigration boss, Muhammad Babandede, says

The comptroller general of the Nigeria Immigration Service(NIS), Muhammad Babandede, hassaid that a lot of fake marriages are taking place between Nigerians and foreigners in the country.

According to Babandede, male foreigners are the ones that are mostly involved in the sham marriages. They come into Nigeria just to get married to a Nigerian woman so they can easily get a residence permit.

The Immigration boss disclosed this when he spoke at the Zonal Coordinators and State Comptrollers of the agency's meeting held at its national headquarters in Abuja yesterday March 14th.

We have observed that foreigners, especially men,are trying to beat the system of issuance of residence permits. A lot of fake or `arrangee’ marriages are going on, and that would give them permission to stay in this country without much liabilities. The advantage is that when you are the spouse of a Nigerian, you have no limitation on the job you will do; you don’t have to pay residence permit fees; it is easier for you to stay. So, we are beginning to face difficulties because many people are becoming married on temporary ground'’ Babandede said.

Speaking further, Babandede said

We will not allow any person to come for holiday marriage, because we have also observed thatpeople just come on holidays, arrange marriages in Nigeria and go back. Read also ; Nigerians arrested over fake marriage “We will not allow that anymore; you have to stay for a period ofsix months after marriage before you get our residence permit. “You have to also enter with permission to stay in Nigeria, so you must come with the residency visa; you can’t come as a tourist and get married,’’ .

''Unlike Jonathan, I acted fast when the Dapchi abduction happened'' President Buhari says

President Buhari today said that unlike the previous administration of President Goodluck Jonathan that was insensitive to the plight of parents of the Chibok girls when they were abducted in April 2014, his administration acted fast when 110 female students were abducted in Dapchi, Yobe state.

Speaking in Damaturu, the Yobe state capital on Wednesday during his sympathy visit to the state, President Buhari  vowed to ensure that the girls are reunited with their families.

The Federal Government’sresponse to the unfortunate abduction of the school girls is a clear departure from the insensitivity of the past administration which looked the other way whilethe Chibok girls were taken away in 2014 and held in captivity for over 3 years. Due to our commitment, over 100 Chibok girls have been rescued and reunited with their families, sent back to school and empowered with requisite skills. You may recall that recently, our negotiation efforts led to the release of abducted University of Maiduguri lecturers, some women Police personnel, students and even an NYSC member. We, therefore, have no doubt that the Dapchi girls will be rescued or released. I can reassure parents, Nigerians and the International Community that we will do all that is within our power to make sure that the girls are brought back safely to their families.

There will be no rest till the last girl, whether from Chibok and Dapchi, is released. The girls, like all our citizens, must enjoy unhindered freedom and pursue their legitimate aspirations. The Dapchi and Chibok students are our girls and must enjoy our protection. They must live to achieve their individual ambitions, to be great women of tomorrow. It is our duty to protect them. We are determined to restore peace to all partof the country – from the West to the East; North to the South. While calling for calm, I implore affected parents and families to restrain from making statements that may jeopardize the success of the rescue mission''.

Why we prefer negotiation tomilitary option for kidnapped Chibok and Dapchi Schoolgirls - President Buhari tells Rex Tillerson

Nigeria prefers to have schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram from Chibok and Dapchiback alive, and that is why it has chosen negotiation, rather than military option, says President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said so while receiving the American Secretary of State,Rex Tillerson at the State House, Abuja. President Buhari added that Nigeria was working in concert with international organizations and negotiators, to ensure that the girls were released unharmed by their captors.

"We are trying to be careful. It is better to get our daughters back alive,"the President said.

He thanked America for assistance rendered in the fight against insurgency, noting that Nigerian forces are good, "but need assistance in the areas of training and equipment."

President Buhari promised that his administration would continue to do its best to secure the country, adding that he would be in Yobe State, from where Dapchi school girls were abducted, later this week"as part of my condolence and sympathy visits to areas where we have had unfortunate events.

"The President pledged free and fair polls in 2019, recalling that the then American Secretary of State, John Kerry, had visited before the 2015 polls,"and he told the party in government then, andthose of us in opposition, to behave ourselves, and we did.

"The visiting Secretary of State commended President Buhari on his strides in the anti-corruption war, to which the Nigerian leader responded that moneys recovered are being invested on development of infrastructure.

Tillerson said Nigeria was a very important country to the U.S, stressing: "You have our support in your challenges. We will also support opportunities to expand the economy, commercial investments, and peaceful polls in2019."
