Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery says Cristiano Ronaldo does not deserve the FIFA Ballon d’Or prize.
The French player, who came third behind Barcelona FC’s Lionel Messi and eventual winner Ronaldo at this year’s awards, told German newspaper AZ Munchen.
I have won everything with the team and individually. Ronaldo won nothing’, he said.
Before the award gala on January 13, there’s been wide spread criticism of the voting system employed by FIFA and politics which many believe favoured Ronaldo.
I am not sad, but it hurts the heart. Do not get me wrong, I am proud to have been there. I feel I deserve this title, but there are so many politics’.
The player and so many football lovers across the globe also criticized FIFA on the selection of FIFA World XI as six players who play in the Spanish league were selected, while the German Bundesliga had only three, despite the fact that German clubs Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund contested the UEFA Champions League final.
This year’s FIFA Ballon d’Or will go down in history as one of the most controversial as voting was extended by two weeks after the deadline had been reached in the first week of November.
Many felt this helped swing the votes in favour of Cristiano Ronaldo who coincidentally had one of the performances of the year after the extension which coincided with the final round of play-off matches for the 2014 World Cup. Ronaldo single handedly took his country to the world cup by scoring a hat-trick against the Swedes.
