The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, says when compared to the past, Nigerians currently enjoy better electricity supply. According to the Minister, this is the feedback he has gotten in recent times from right thinking Nigerians.

The Minister said the right thinking Nigerians have revealed to him that they now spend less amount of money to power their alternative source of electricity and enjoy a good quantity from the National grid. Even if those who weremost vocal in condemnation when the situation appeared very dire are now uttering some muted acknowledgment that it hasimproved, we must continue to draw inspiration from well-meaning and right thinking Nigerians who were gracious enough to publicly acknowledge that they are saving some money from diesel  and the money they used to spend for generators; theyare running their generators for fewer hours; and they are gettingcomparably more power than before. It is because of those gracious and well-meaning and right thinking Nigerians that we must dig deeper, work harder and be more determined to improve service delivery” he said

Politicians are preoccupied with next election, but I'm bothered more about security and the economy - President Buhari tells Theresa May

The three-pronged focus of the current administration resonatedthrough the conversation, asPresident Muhammadu Buhariheld a bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister,Theresa May today at 10, Downing Street, London."We campaigned on three major issues, to secure the country, revive the economy and fight corruption,” said the President.

“We have elections next year, politicians are already preoccupied with the polls, but I am bothered more about securityand the economy," he stressed.

Recalling that Nigeria and Britain have a long history of cooperation on several fronts, President Buhari stated: "People ought to know how they arrived where they are, if they would move forward. It was a mistake for us to have stopped the teaching of history as a subject inschools, but we are returning it to the curriculum now.

"He commended British companies likeUnilever, Cadbury, and many others, "who have stood with Nigeria through thick and thin. Even when we fought a Civil War, they never left.

"But likeOliver Twist, we ask for more investments. We are encouraging more British companies to come to Nigeria. We appreciate the support you have given in training and equipping our military, particularly in the war against insurgency, but we want to also continue to work with you on trade and investment.

"President Buhari briefed Prime Minister May on the strides in agriculture, which he said has putNigeria firmly on the road to foodself-sufficiency.

"I am very pleased with the successes in agriculture," he said, adding: "We have cut rice importation by about 90%, made lots of savings of foreign exchange, and generated employment. People had rushed to the cities to get oil money, at the expense of farming. But luckily, they are now going back to the farms. Even professionals are going back to the land. We aremaking steady progress on the road to food security.

"On education, President Buhari said more investment was being made, because "people can look after themselves if well educated. In this age of technology, education is very important. We need well-staffed and well-equipped institutions to move into the next generation."

Climate change and environmental issues also came up for discussion, and President Buhari brought up the necessity of inter-basin water transfer from Congo Basin to Lake Chad.

According to him: "The Lake Chadis now about 10% of its original size, and it is perhaps one of the reasons our youths dare both theSahara Desert and the Mediterranean, to get to Europe. But if there is inter-basin water transfer, about 40 million people in Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, Chad, and other countries stand to benefit. I made the case during the Climate Change Summit in France. If Lake Chad is recharged,it will reduce the number of youths coming to Europe to increase social problems. We brought back about 4,000 people from Libya recently. Almost all ofthem were below 30, and Libya was not their final destination. They were headed to Europe.

"Prime Minister May, in her remarks, said Britain would continue to work with Nigeria in the areas of training and equipping the military. She was particular about abduction of young schoolgirls by Boko Haram, noting that Britain would continue to give Nigeria needed assistance.

The Prime Minister said the Buhari administration has "been making good progress on the economy," and urged it to maintain the focus, despite approaching elections, and increase in political activities.

On education and climate change, she declared: "Good grounding in education is good. It is important to equip young people for today'sworld. It is also a good bastion and defence against modern slavery. The issue of the environment and climate change is very important, because of its impact on many countries in the Commonwealth. Stability at homeis important, to curb illegal migration.

"Prime Minister May, who commended President Buhari forthe much he has been doing on improving trade and business forNigeria, noted that it was also time to boost intra-Commonwealth trade.

''Only Buhari can determine if he wants Osinbajo as his running mate in 2019'' APC says

Spokesperson of the All Progressive Congress APC, Abdullahi Bolaji, says it is only President Buhari who can determine if he wants to run with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo as his running mate in 2019. This is after President Buhari must have emerged the party's presidential flagbearer after a presidential primary must have been conducted.

Bolaji made the clarification few days after President Buhari declared interest to run for a second term in office. Some Nigerians have expressed fears that President Buhari might drop Osinbajo and pick someone else to run with him in 2019.

In an interview with Punch, Bolajistated that the party has no hand in chosing who President Buhari will run with

''It is not the duty of the party to impose someone on the presidential candidate.  In any case, if the President emerges as the party’s candidate, we won’t impose anyone on him. Remember he (Buhari)is not going to be the sole aspirant? But it is the duty and the responsibility of the candidate to pick whosoever he likes and he is ready to work with.  It is not the duty of the party to pick or impose anyone on him. No, that is not democracy. So, if President Buhari emerges as our candidate, he is the one to pick and also announce his running mate.”Bolaji said

President Buhari, in 2014, picked Osinbajo as his running mate for the 2015 election which they won. Osinbajo was said to have been nominated by the National leader of APC, Bola Tinubu.

Why I threatened not to support my husband for second term - Aisha Buhari

Aisha Buhari, the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday, April 14, said that she criticised her husband and threatened to withdraw her support for his re-election bid because of her“sense of justice and not confrontation or disrespect.

”Premium Times reports that said in her acceptance letter to Vanguard Newspaper which made her its person of the year this week, that she didn’t intend to confront or disrespect the president.

Aisha Buhari drew worldwide attention when she criticised Muhammadu Buhari in an October 2016 interview with the BBC, saying she feared his administration was veering from its mandate to the people.

She also expressed doubt that she would support him if he seeks re-election unless he implemented immediate changes in personnel and policies.“He is yet to tell me if he’ll seek re-election but I have decided as his wife that if things continue like this up to 2019, I will not go out and campaign again and ask any woman to vote like I did before.

“I will never do it again”, Aisha Buhari warned.Buhari responded at the time by telling her to save her opinion of his government and confine herself to the kitchen, sparking biting ridicule from the public.Nearly two years on, Buhari has commenced his re-election campaign, but yet to effect the cabinet shake-up demandedby his wife.

Aisha Buhari had said the shake-up was necessary to encourage those who worked fervently to actualise her husband’s victoryin 2015.In her acceptance statement to Vanguard, Aisha Buhari did not say whether her expectations have been met, but indicated she would support his re-election bid.

But as recently as January, she recirculated videos of senators who delivered scathing review of her husband’s performance in office.“One of the reasons adduced for honouringme was the interview I granted which somepeople saw as criticism to a government that I am part of,” she was quoted as sayingin the statement circulated by her media aide Suleiman Haruna.

“I need to state that my position was a result of my sense of justice and not confrontation or disrespect. I was brought up to stand by the truth and this is how I have always been,”“As we are all aware, Nigerians elected this administration based on the trust and confidence they have on my husband.

“I therefore feel that we are here to serve Nigeria to the best of our ability. Let me usethis opportunity to state that I support my husband in this call to service and will continue to do so,” she added.
