Arsenal news: Jose Mourinho accused of damaging Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s career

ARMENIA’S coach Artur Petrosyan has taken a huge swipe at Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho after Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s move to Arsenal.

During his 18 month spell at Manchester United, Mkhitaryan barely got a look-in and fell out of favour under Jose Mourinho. However, after joining Arsenal on Monday, the Armenian playmaker will be looking to revitalise his career with the Gunners.

And Petrosyan insists Mkhitaryan is better off away from United and has accused Mourinho of damaging the player’s career.

“I think Henrikh had a problem with the United coach and at Arsenal, it will be another thing and not the same situation,” he said.

Yoruba leaders reject cattle colonies, ask FG to declare herdsmen terrorists

Yoruba leaders under the aegis of Yoruba Summit have announced their rejection of the federal government's proposal to establish cattle colonies for animal herdersacross the country.

According to a statement signed on behalf of the group by Yinka Odumakin, the rejection was informed by the repeated criminal activities of herdsmen across Yorubaland, which have seen a pregnant woman in Ekiti and a farmer in Ogun state killed as well as the setting ablaze of the farms of Olu Falae, former Secretary to the Federal Government; former Chief of NavalStaff, Vice-Admiral Samuel Afolayan (retd.); Dele Adigun, former secretary to the Oyo state government; and Roseline Ogege.

"These renewed attacks on Youruba property and persons were considered unwarranted, provocative and brutal assault by marauding elements, who now carry on as if the laws of the country have been suspended on their behalf by complicit authorities,"the statement said.

The leaders condemned the attacks and called on the the federal government to liveup to its responsibility by enforcing the laws against the perpetrators to regain the confidence of the people.

They argued that setting up cattle colonies amounted to aiding private business enterprise in violation of the sensibilities ofdifferent nationalities, whose lands will be partitioned for Fulani herdsmen.

The Yoruba Summit said the proposal is akin to the Berlin Conference at which Africa was portioned for different colonial powers.

"No inch of Yorubaland will be available forcow colony, as the Yoruba are in favour of only ranching of cattle through which thosein such business will acquire land according to extant rules and subject their operations to the norms and culture of their host communities,"the statement said.

The leaders equally called on Yoruba people to begin venturing into modern ranching for home consumption and export, while urging governments of states in the South-West to evolve policies in promotion of ranching by Yoruba people.

In addition, the Yoruba leaders asked the federal government to declare killer herdsmen and militias as terrorists, disarmthem, stop illegal immigration of armed herders and others into Nigeria through thef ar northern and northwestern borders of Nigeria.Their demands from the federal government also included an inquiry into the serial cases of illegal weapons discovered at the Lagos ports, saying they a pose serious challenge to the country's security.

Their demands from the federal government also included an inquiry into the serial cases of illegal weapons discovered at the Lagos ports, saying they a pose serious challenge to the country's security.

The demands, they said, will bring an end tothe threats of the Fulani herdsmen and return the county to the modern governance.

Buhari is not talking about 2019 election - Yemi Osinbajo

Vice president Yemi Osinbajo has said President Muhammadu Buhari is focused on delivering on the promises he made to Nigerians and is not talking about the general election due in 2019.

“The president is focused on this term. He wants to ensure that he delivers on the promises that were made. He is not talking about 2019,”Reuters reported Yemi Osinbajo as saying in an interview with CNBC on Thursday, January 25.

Obasanjo does not mean well for Nigeria - Kalu reacts to former president’s letter

Orji Kalu, a former governor of Abia state, has hit back at ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo over his letter to President Muhammadu Buhari criticising his alleged poor handling of the economy and advisingagainst contesting the 2019 presidential election.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Kalu spoke at the Murtala Muhammed Airport 2, Lagos, stating that Obasanjo had no moral right to comment on such national issues.

The former governor added that Buhari’s government may be slow in taking critical decisions, but had done well in tackling corruption.

According to him, Buhari had recorded modest achievements in his two and half years tenure, which necessitates his re-election.

“I am not going to talk about former President Obasanjo’s letter because I am going to make some consultations with the United States, Germany, China and the United Kingdom, then I will come back and speak on that letter.

“I think Obasanjo’s letter is not in the best interest of Nigeria. I don’t want to reply himbecause I have given you examples times without number.

“There are three express roads Obasanjo refused to build when he was the president of Nigeria; Port Harcourt-Okigwe-Umuahia-Enugu expressway. It is being built now by the Buhari administration.

“Another one is the Enugu-Awka-Onitsha Expressway. It is being built now by the Buhari administration. Obasanjo did not build it.

“Then there is the Onitsha-Owerri-Aba Expressway. The Buhari administration is building it now.

“Between Obasanjo and Buhari who should I call my friend in real terms? So Buhari is my friend; he is a better president,"Kalu said adding that Nigerians have also not forgotten the $16 billion wasted on building power plants by the Obasanjo administration which yielded no result.

Presidency replies Obasanjo, says the ex-President is ignorant of Buhari’s achievements

The Federal Government has responded to the explosive letter former President Olusegun Obasanjo sent to President Buhari yesterday in which he condemned President Bhari's style of government and advised him not to seek reelection but to rather resign now and proceed on a peaceful retirement.

Reacting to Obasanjo's letter, the Minister of Information and Culture,Lai Mohammed, in a statement released today, said Obasanjo is ignorant of all the laudable achievements of the Buhari led administration.

Read full statement below; We have read the press statementby former President Olusegun Obasanjo on the State of the Nation.

For the record, Chief Obasanjo is a patriot, and he has proven this time and time again. We appreciate what he said concerning the Administration’s performance in two out of the three key issues that formed the plank of its campaign: Fighting corruption and tackling insurgency. Specifically, the former President said President Buhari must be given credit for his achievement so far in these two areas. We thank him for this.

Apparently, the former President believes that the Administration does not deserve a pass mark in the area of the economy, which is the third of our three-pronged campaign promises

.We have no doubt that in the face of massive challenges in this area, this Administration has availed itself creditably. We believe that Chief Obasanjo, because of his very busy schedule, may not have been fullyavailed of developments in the government’s efforts to revamp the economy, which was battered by the consequences of over-dependence on a commodity as well as unprecedented pillaging of the treasury.T

oday, most of the indices by which an economy is measured are looking up. Permit me to say, however, that Nigeria would not have exited recession through a mere order or if the Administration had not made use of ”good Nigerians” who could help.

This Administration is making steady progress in its determined effort to revamp the economy, and the results are showing:

* Foreign Reserves have peaked at $40b, the highest level in about four years, and up from $24 billion just a year ago, even though when we came in, the price of oil had crashed woefully.

* According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBC), headline inflation has fallen for 11 consecutive months, standing at 15.37% as at Dec. 2017. This is the lowest inflation rate since Jan 2017, and it has met and surpassed the target set for inflation in the Administration’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP).

* Our determined implementationof the Treasury Single Account (TSA) has stopped the haemorrhaging of the treasury. Some 108 billion Naira has been saved from removal of maintenance fees payable to banks, pre-TSA. The nation is being saved 24.7 billion Naira monthly with the full implementation of the TSA.

*  The elimination of ghost workers has saved the nation 120 billion Naira*   At about 1.8 billion dollars, the capital inflows in the second quarter of 2017 were almost double the $908 million in the first quarter.

*  In the wake of a stable Naira and increased investment inflows,Nigeria’s stock market emerged one of the best-performing in the world, delivering returns in excess of 40 percent.*  Nigeria rose 24 places on the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business ranking, and earned a place on the List of Top 10 Reformers in the world.

* According to Q3 2017 figures, agriculture export is up year-on-year by 25%, solid minerals exports are up year-on-year by 78%, raw materials exports are up 70% year-on-year and manufactured goods exports are up 22% year-on-year.

* Government agencies such as the Nigeria Customs Service are reporting highest-ever revenue collection, while JAMB, under the new management appointed by President Buhari in 2016, remittedN7.8 billion to the coffers of the federal government. The total amount remitted by JAMB between 2010 and 2016 was a paltry N51 million!

These positive indices may not have immediately impacted positively on Nigerians, but Nigerians will definitely get a newlease of life a short while from now. This is because the good news from the agricultural sector, which is recording a bumper harvest, will bring down the cost of foodstuffs, especially such staple as rice, and our massive Social Investment Programme will ease the pain of the most vulnerable in the society.

When we assumed office in 2015, some 6 million farmers were involved in rice production. Thanks to the Anchor Borrowers’programme of this Administration, we have grown that number to over 12 million farmers. The result is that our rice import from Thailand alone has dropped from 644 metric tonnes to 22,000 MT in just two years. This is phenomenal.

Apart from rice, Nigeria is also doing well in other grains, especially Millet, Sorghum and Maize. We are now the second largest producer of sorghum after the US, the third in millet after India and our breweries are now enjoying local sourcing of those commodities.

For maize, we are producing 10 million tons while we need about 13 million tons for both human and animal nutrition. Nigeria leads the world in the yam and cassava production. We account for 70% of the world’s yam production. In two years, we hope to be the world’s largest exporter of yam! Overall, our ambition is that agriculture should rise from 25% to 40% of GDP so that we can banish poverty and overcome our economic anxiety.

Our Social Investment Programme is Nigeria’s most ambitious social welfare programme ever. Currently, 5.2 million primary school children in 28,249 schools in 19 states are being fed daily; 200,000 unemployed graduates have enlisted into the N-power Job Scheme, and a quarter of a million loans already distributed to artisans, traders, and farmers.

Finally, our investment in infrastructure is simply unprecedented. This is because infrastructure is key to faster economic growth and development.

Here is a synopsis of what we have done in this area:

* Power Generation at an all-time high of 7,000mw and all can be transmitted

* RAIL: Lagos-Kano Standard Gauge is on. Lagos-Ibadan sector ready 2019, Kano-Kaduna ready 2019; The entire stretch ready 2021; Negotiations on for Coastal Rail covering 15 cities from Lagos to Calabar.

* ROAD: 25 major highways beingfunded with the N100b Sukuk Bond, and all geopolitical zones are benefitting equally.

This Administration is not unaware of the enormity of the challenges facing the nation, but we are up to the task. We have taken the bull by the horns, and long-suffering Nigerians will begin to experience a new lease of life as our efforts yield fruits. We will not go into a state of funkfor whatever reason.

On the Herders/Farmers’ clashes, this Administration is determinedto end the crisis resulting from this once and for all, not minding that fact that the clashes predate us. I will urge Nigerians to have faith in the Administration’s ability to resolve the crisis and towatch out for concrete measures in this regard.

On whether or not President Muhammadu Buhari should run for another term, it is true that many Nigerians have been calling on the President to run again, while others are opposed to his return.

However, we believe this issue is a distraction for the President at this time. This is because Mr President spends every waking hours tackling the enormous challenges facing the nation, mostof which were bequeathed to his Administration by successive past Administrations. He is committed to fulfilling the mandate given to him by Nigerians in 2015. And that’s where we are right now!

Finally, we have no reason to believe that former President Obasanjo has any motive beyond the well-being of the nation in issuing his Special Press Statement. We have also taken hisadmonition in good faith, and we thank him most sincerely for taking time off his busy schedule to pen such a long statement.

PDP reacts to Obasanjo's letter to President Buhari

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the counsel by former president Olusegun Obasanjo that President Muhammadu Buhari should not seek a re-election in 2019 as courageous, timeous and patriotic, adding that such has vindicated its position.

The party, however, rejected the call by Chief Obasanjo for a third force saying thatsuch would amount to repeating the same blunder that brought in the ideologically vacuous APC and the Buhari presidency which has now wrecked havoc on the nation in its almost three years of governance.

PDP national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, in a statement on Tuesday, January 23, said the fact that President Buhari and the APC have failed the nation is obvious to all, adding that Nigerians have already taken an irrevocable position against them ahead of the 2019 elections.

According to the PDP, Chief Obasanjo’s counsel has rekindled the fate of the peoplein the democratic process, stressing however that the solution does not lie in creating another political quicksand in a third force but consolidating on a rescue mission with the repositioned PDP which Nigerians have already embraced. It said Nigerians would recall that in the heat of 2015 elections, many citizens, who claimed to have become tired of the PDP and its government, opted for a coalition ofstrange bedfellows who had little or no experience in governance as a vehicle for electoral victory. Expectedly, in their confusion, they have plunged us into this regrettable situation that has brought our nation to its knees.

PDP maintained that“repeating the old mistake of congregating political strangerscannot help our nation at this time, more so, when the few concerns raised by the former President about the PDP no longer obtain under the refocused and rebranded PDP.

“The PDP is now standing on a truly democratic ground that perfectly represents and reflects the hopes and aspirations of all Nigerians irrespective of their class, creed or tribe.

“That is why our great party has now, morethan ever before, become a center of the new patriotic and broad-based engagements by well-meaning Nigerians and coalitions across board, including past leaders, in rekindling our democratic process that places priority on returning power to the people.

“This accounts for the reason former President Obasanjo, just like most Nigerians today, are concerned about the quality of presidential candidates to be presented by various parties for the 2019 election.

“The fact is that while the APC is already caught up with President Buhari, the PDP is open for a new engagement that will throw up the President, which our nation truly deserves at this crucial moment

.“We therefore call on Nigerians, including all our leaders across board, to come together to rebuild our nation on PDP’s consolidated base rather than traversing on another learning curve

."In a statement: The Way Out: A Clarion Call for Coalition for Nigeria Movement,Obasanjo said President Buhari has performed far below expectationjust as headded that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is not the solution to the country's challenges.Obasanjo asked Buhari to honourably dismount from the horse and join the league of former leaders whose experience, influence, wisdom and outreachcan be deployed on the side line for the good of the country.
